Keiki Get Hands On With Storm Water Hawaii at Children’s Discovery Center
July 2, 2010
Participants in the Children’s Discovery Center’s eco-camp program got a lesson in storm water maintenance from the Hawaii Department of Transportation (DOT) Storm Water Management Program (SWMP). The SWMP team organized an interactive demonstration for keiki and their parents to explain the relationship between Hawaii’s storm drains and our ocean environment.
The students enjoyed a live storytelling session, complete with an animated illustration of Malama, the SWMP’s mascot humuhumunukunukuapua'a, and his friends in their ocean habitat. Afterwards, students helped to identify different types of storm water violations on a colorful map that featured everyday activities that can cause harm to our ocean resources. The students and other visiting children were also excited to see the storm water 3-D interactive model, which demonstrated how pollutants in storm water runoff travel to the ocean. With guidance from the SWMP team, kids were able to create “rain” for the model and saw how trash and other types of litter made their way into the ocean. Throughout the day, the SWMP team also took free photos of kids wearing Malama costumes in front of a large, colorful ocean backdrop. Keiki received their photos in a custom “Stick it to Storm Water Pollution” frame along with goodie bags filled with educational materials and supplies.
