Mauka to Makai Expo
May 19, 2008
Volunteers from the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation Storm Water Management Program and its mascot Malama had fun taking part in the Mauka to Makai Expo at the Waikiki Aquarium on Saturday, April 12.
The Expo was a part of the observance of Earth Month in the Ala Wai and was designed to highlight the need to protect Hawaii’s water resources. Malama and his people friends from the Storm Water Management Program were there to let everyone know what they can do to keep storm water runoff clean, in order to protect our ocean and reefs.
Expo attendees had a chance to have their photos taken while wearing a colorful “Malama suit.” Some attendees also got to have their picture taken with program spokesman Jordan Segundo. Jordan signed autographs too, and talked with people about the importance of protecting our ocean and the resources it provides us.
Malama urges people to take action since the storm drain system along our highways leads directly to the ocean. Everyone can do things to keep pollutants out of our storm water – like fixing oil leaks from our cars, not littering, picking up after our pets, and washing our cars on the lawn or at a commercial car wash. These may seem like small things, but when we all do them, they lead to healthy streams and a clean ocean for everyone to enjoy.
