Congratulations to the Spiritual Assembly of Ewa – Oahu (Baha’is of Wahiawa), a chapter of the Baha’i faith, which has been selected as the Department of Transportation, Highways Division, Oahu District’s Second Quarter 2016 Adopt-A-Highway Champions!
The Baha’is of Wahiawa’s route for the Adopt-A-Highway program is on Kamehameha Highway near Wahiawa.
The Baha’is of Wahiawa have been a part of the Adopt-A-Highway program since 1995, and their quarterly cleanup campaigns bring together the Ewa community of Baha’is, from Aiea to Makakilo.
Our [quarterly highway cleanups] help to connect members of our faith and inspire them to work to improve their own lives and the lives of others.
“We are proud to contribute to the betterment of society through these quarterly highway cleanups,” said Hartson Doak of the Baha’is of Wahiawa. “Our events help to connect members of our faith, individuals and families alike, and inspire them to work to improve their own lives and the lives of others, as per the teachings of the Baha’i faith.”
Doak says over the past 20 years, his organization has picked up 1,073 bags, or roughly 8,600 pounds, of trash. He says when they first began, they had to pull many heavy bulk items from off the roadway. He says they don’t see as many such items being dumped these days. He also said that they used to see many more bottles and cans strewn about, but since recycling efforts have been implemented, they see fewer of those items as well.
“We mostly see lots of fast food wrappers,” Doak said. “A lot of McDonalds and Jack in the Box wrappers, and 7-Eleven Big Gulp cups.”
Special thanks to the volunteers at the Baha’is of Wahiawa, for their efforts in helping prevent trash from entering our storm drains and polluting our waters. We are proud to recognize their commitment to the Adopt-A-Highway program!
