Crews have been hard at work on a major project on the Windward side of Oahu for the past two months, helping shore up areas prone to sediment erosion. The Kawainui Watershed BMP Project encompasses slope repair at six sites near Kailua. These projects are within the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation’s right-of-way and involve installing multiple erosion control measures.

Beginning in mid-February, crews began installing the measures, including a mixture of hydromulch to promote revegetation on the slopes and erosion control netting to prevent soil from being caught in storm water runoff.

The entire project is budgeted at approximately $1.9 million, and is expected to be finished in late June.
