Each year, we celebrate World Oceans Day on June 8 and this year, the World Oceans Committee is focused on conservation action with a focus on protecting the planet’s oceans by creating a healthy aquatic climate.

Over 70 percent of the planet is covered by the world’s oceans and in order to keep these oceans blue and vibrant it is important that we work together to protect and conserve the earth’s waters. Maintaining a healthy ocean is crucial to combating the climate crisis, and by protecting the world’s oceans, we can positively influence our planet’s life support systems, specifically the interconnected issues of the ocean, climate, and biodiversity.

World Oceans day is an opportunity for people of all ages around the world to celebrate and positively impact the future of our oceans! Working together to maintain a healthy oceanic environment can be done on all scales, from small to large. Here in Hawaii, we are closely connected to the ocean and its importance, which makes it vital for our community to work towards maintaining our surroundings to keep our oceans clean and safe.

A few ways to partake in World Oceans Day include:

  • Organize or participate in beach clean ups.
  • Opt for reef safe sunscreen and properly dispose of all non-reef safe products.
  • Do not use chemicals or dyes near waterways
  • Enjoy beach days with limited items. Bring snacks that aren’t prepackaged, such as fruits or veggies, and be sure to take all of your belongings with you and dispose of your trash properly before you head home. If there are no trash or recycling bins available, hold on to your items and dispose of them properly at home!
  • Sign a petition to encourage your local leaders to make moves that will protect our oceans.
  • Raise awareness by sharing your love for the oceans with family, friends, and others.

Our Storm Water Hawaii team is celebrating by spreading awareness during Sea Life Park’s World Oceans Day celebration on June 11-13. Join us each day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to learn more about our storm drains and why it’s important to each do our part!
