Perimeter controls on construction projects are a temporary best management practice (BMP) for sediment control. Used along the site perimeter, around temporary stockpiles, at the toe of a slope and downslope of exposed areas, perimeter controls keep sediment and potential pollutants contained, preventing them from entering our storm drains and negatively affecting Hawaii’s streams and ocean.

Factors to Consider

When choosing the type of perimeter controls to install on a construction project, take the following into consideration:

  1. Drainage area
  2. Type of water flow (i.e. sheet flow)
  3. Installation requirements
  4. Maintenance requirements

Perimeter Control Products

A variety of products that provide an array of options for perimeter control are currently on the market.

A silt fence (pictured here), filter socks, vegetated buffers or a combination of any of these controls can be effective at sediment control when installed properly and maintained regularly.

Be sure to choose perimeter controls that work best for your specific site conditions. Always install perimeter controls prior to any soil disturbance and adhere to manufacturer requirements for installation. Remember that all perimeter controls must be inspected regularly and maintenance must be conducted as needed.

Ultimately, the key to preventing potential pollutants from leaving a construction project and entering Hawaii’s storm drains is choosing proper BMPs throughout the entire project.
