This month, storm water professionals, construction industry leaders, and related vendors will come together for the Hawaii Department of Transportation’s (HDOT) 2023 Protect Our Water Conference! Attendees will learn about storm water, our state’s storm drain system, and best management practices from the experts. The event will be held at the Hawaii Convention Center on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. While registration is now closed, videos of each presentation can be found on our YouTube channel after the event.

While construction supports the economy as a major industry throughout our islands, it can have potentially disastrous effects on the environment. Construction can increase the rate of erosion by as much as 1,000 times the natural rate. Sediment pollution, the most common pollutant from construction activities, has been proven to cause monetary damages of up to $16 billion per year.

HDOT has a comprehensive construction site runoff control program to minimize the discharge of pollutants from construction activities on state highways. Gaining a better understanding of best management practices through events like HDOT’s annual Protect Our Water Conference will help us to better care for our environment while saving on costly damages.

On our website, we have resources available for designers and contractors to ensure all are aware of the plans and permits currently in place. Learn about site management, erosion control, sediment control, and more. Mahalo for joining our efforts to protect our water!
