If you are driving, it is important to know what to do when a hurricane or another natural disaster is looming. Your vehicle may be an invaluable tool to get you to safety and it is important to know how to protect yourself, your passengers and other fellow drivers.

Because hurricanes may occur sooner than expected, here are some tips to consider while driving before, during, and after a natural disaster strikes:

Keep your gas tank full. In light of a natural disaster, gas stations may be damaged or closed. It is important to keep your gas tank at least half full at all times in case of evacuation.

Unfortunately, one of the worst places to be during a hurricane is inside a car. Find shelter as quickly as possible as high winds and severe rain can impair the safety of the driver and passengers in a car.

If you notice flooding on the roads or highways, do NOT drive through it. Flooded roads are often much deeper than they appear and flood waters can wash away parts of the actual road.

Steer clear from large cracks in the pavement, damaged bridges, downed power lines, and other potential risks.

Always follow posted signs warning drivers of potential dangers.

Bring food and other emergency supplies with you in your car.

Have paper maps ready just in case cell service or GPS systems are not functioning.

While driving before, during, and after a natural disaster occurs, it is always best to proceed with caution and utilize safe driving practices.
